Hole in Lifter?

I had lifter go bad on a new engine this spring and just was able to get it in the shop to have it replaced. Mechanic said there was a hole all the way through the lifter and some peices were missing from the inside of the lifter.

Anyone have that happen before? Know what caused it?

He checked the cam with a dial indicator and it tested within a few thousands on each lobe. No indication that the cam is bad so at this point just looking at putting in a new set of lifters and putting it back together.

Shit happens! It is rare but it happens. No need to worry about the rest of them. That one might have been a second that wasn't caught at the factory. You just drew the short straw this time..

If it is a flat tappet cam putting a new lifter on an old cam is a bad idea. I know people do it all the time because of money or the work/time involved in changing the cam but I have been working on stuff for about 24 years and I have always heard and read dont put new lifters on an old cam and if using a used cam make sure the lifters go back on the lobe they came from. A new lifter might work but it also might kill the lobe and or lifter again.
