Ho- 302 that lacks power

Yeah theres no room for a breather on the other cover. It's tucked up under the heater box.

hard to say without seeing what you're working on, but it sounds like it's going to need a breather. Breathers for 2.9L V6 or 2.3L HSC I know are very short in comparison to metal aftermarket breathers. They also make oil caps with breathers as a unit.

Mine just has PCV and a breather with a filter. The breather is my oil cap...

Yeah I tried puting a breather in the passenger side cover but it's just barely too tall. So I put a thin cap on and put the breather on the driver side cover. I pulled the timing chain cover off to make sure it was in time which it was. Then I let it set over night, started it up and started adjusting the carb. It back fired a couple times while I was adjusting it and now I'm where I am lol. The truck idles good now but it lacks power still, cuts out when I floor it, misses at 30+ mph and I beleive it's cuz when it back fired it blew out the intake gaskets which caused vacuume leaks then on top of that when I shut it down it whistles right next to the harmonic balancer through the pan gasket. So now I'm gonna try to fix my screw ups today.

One way to test for intake leaks is to take some starter fluid in a can and CAREFULLY spraying it near the gaskets. If you have a leak the rpm's will bump for a sec.

I used break cleaner and it bogged down to the point it almost died.

Sounds like you may have found at least one issue then. Hopefully the gaskets are the only issue you have.

Baddad457- I'm not sure on the timing. My sister assembled the motor. She worked at a mustang shop but that's the next thing I'm gonna check. It's pretty much gutless. I'm out of town for a couple more weeks so I can't work on it. I prefer a manuals trans though. The c6 was easy to come by so that's what I used. I like the thought of havin OD too. You wouldn't happen to know what the compression should be would you?

Your sister assembled the motor? That's ultra cool. I don't hear of many female techs.

As for compression, it doesn't sound like you've changed anything internal that would change the compression. Am I wrong? If so I could have sworn it was 9:1

Yeah she's pretty diff. She used to race dirt bikes and she has a mustang she built a 347stroker for and is in the middle of restoring.
My motor has new 4.030 bore speed pro hypereutecti piston heads, pro comp aluminum racing heads. I forget the model number.

Kryp- freck I'm gettin tired of Workin on it lol. Gotta get it done though.

Change the intake gaskets and go from there. Dont go cheap in the gaskets either. Sounds like it sucked its own gasket in, not the first time I have heard of an engine doing this either.

Ok I can't beleive my luck. If it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck. My intake is designed for stock heads. The heads are ported and the ports are so big the manifold barely cover the ports on the heads. Gotta get a new intake that is ported so the walls of the ports match up. I wish I could upload pics from my damn phone so you guys could see what Im talkin about.

I really thought it was fishy when you said the intake barely covered the ports :dntknw:

Bogging with the brake cleaner means it is getting A LOT of it in the intake, normally when it just catches a whiff through a slight leak it revs up... too much and you start to put the fire out.

While you are here you may need to re-evaluate your build as to whether you need different heads or a different intake worse. If the rest of the engine won't capitalize on the heads and intake it would be a waste to go that route...

Yep cuz there ain't enough room on the passenger side to fit a breather or a cap that has a hole for the pcv. The valve cover is too tall to clear them. The heater box is in the way.

85_Ranger - I'm gonna get a new intake. It's gonna be the cheapest way to go and the least work.

What kind of intake is it? I'm in the market for a dual plane intake and may be able to take out off your hands for the right price. PM me if you are interested in selling it.
