Has anyone here hitched hiked? Cross country style? I have heard that fewer people will pickup hitchhikers anymore, I hardly ever see them, where did they go? What is your opinion on giving somone a ride?

Definitely WILL NOT give anyone a ride. Our commercial insurance won't allow it for one. Also with the numbers of loads being stolen and the whack jobs out there I won't endanger my life.

Personally I've just heard too many stories about knives pulled on people, guns, cracked out dustheads... I'd definitely not pick anybody up. Just isn't smart.

There are quite a few hitchhikers out my way though.

I did alot of hitching back in the day, was picked up by some interesting people. Today I would pick someone up if I see a car broke down or something of that nature. I live in small town USA though.

i have givein peaple rids be for when im out in the sticks, but they ride in back and the .45 has one in the pipe. i will never let some one get in the cab. in high school a couple of buddies and i i hoped on a train and went across washington, it was pretty awsome most of it was going through the rocky mountains it was fun.

I pick them up, but I make a Navy Seal with a hand grenade in each hand, pin out, and a loaded MP5 and an 870 with flachettes and an LAV with a Bushmaster pointed out them following--plus a Stealth bomber with a load of Durandal runway busters above. Then I pick them up--if they are dead.

The only time I have picked anyone up was when there were two of us. Then we let the guy ride shotgun and one of us sat behind. He told us bullshit 'nam stories, so that was fun. One other time me and another guy picked up a girl that told us all of her problems--and they were too much, so we booted her. That pretty much cured me. I'm more worried about listening to people's problems than being assaulted by a Scooby Doo looking nut.

I do help people that are broken down when it seems they are in actual distress and not meerly inconvienienced.

In my town it is getting dangerous to stop and help anyone.

I saw some people in distress once. I was on my way to work in the F-250. We had 6 inches of fresh powder and I came around a corner to see a man ramming the back of his wife's car with his own trying to get it unstuck.

I pulled her home and didn't get so much as a thank you.

I've changed a fair share of tires, jumped batteries, and let people use my cell phone. I've only given' one guy a ride and he was from one of my classes from college. I'd never give a stranger a ride though.... not with some of the loonies you see and hear about out there.

I stopped for a little old lady who flagged me down on the side of the road once, she had a flat. Thats about it.

My uncle used to hitchhike all the way from Fort Lauderdale FL to Masonville NY.
Carried a burgerking cup with him the whole way.. free refills.

I very rarely give anyone a ride. Too many thefts and car jacks in/around the city to really help out. But if I come across somebody in a parking lot that needs help with a tire change or a jump, I'll try to help if the surrondings are clear and look safe. I have once given a guy a ride to a gas station. Only because the area around him was clear (don't want to find out if someones going to jump me) and because the gas station was on government grounds.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I just try to look them over and decide. Location is a big part. In or around a city, no way. Out in the country I'm more trusting.

Peoria is a rough looking place--though I've only seen it around the interstate exits.

Columbus, Ohio--you'll be killed by a car if you tried to stop for anyone. The traffic isn't excessive (I commuted for a year there) but the traffic patterns were designed by a blind penguin that tripped over an inkwell.

The worst is around St. Louis. There is normally a car on fire and three or four on blocks on the side of the interstate when I pass through there.

Fixed it for ya! Though it is no columbus, we have traditionally had the second highest murder rate in IL..........next to East St. Louis. You were spot on in your last statement. I've driven my fare share of the bad parts of Peoria and its not that bad. Just don't walk it at night, or if you do better put on some dark makeup. I can't wait to get out of this city.:shout:
