2.3L ('83-'97) High RPM @ startup

These rangers were known for this especially during colder weather. My 94 3.0 5spd ranger only did this during severe cold weather, warm days it would go to 1500 and lower down to 700-750...went over it thru the years, and no issues found to resolve it. Now that truck is gone.

I've known lots of other individuals who had 90s explorers and rangers that did the same thing.

I now have a 97 3.0 5spd ranger, as I've gone thru it replacing things it needed with motorcraft parts and felpro gaskets. When I installed a cluster with a tach few months ago when it was still warm it went to 1200-1500..now it being much colder it goes to 2000...it settles down fairly quickly. Your trucks idle drops as it should, I would say your good and the truck is behaving normal. These older rangers are cold blooded.

Dumb thought but it might be worth it to half the surface area available to the IAC as an air source... If you can drive 20 in 2nd with the brakes on there's plenty of air available, reducing it wouldn't hurt :)
