High revs

I’ve got a 98 ranger 3.0 manual tranny and the revs stay high when shifting gears. I’ve changed the throttle body, IAC valve, TPS sensor, Map sensor, MAP sensor and the engine coolant sensor with no change at all. I recently smoked the vacuum lines and found a leak back around the gas tank, took bed off, dropped gas tank and fixed that line but still didn’t help at all. I’m out of ideas on this thing. What else could cause this?!?!?

Did you check the throttle cable to see if it was sliding freely and without resistance?

Dirty throttle body can stick open or an improperly cleaned throttle body can stick open. When you replaced the TPS and IAC did you do an idle relearn procedure?

Also how high is high? Rpms should stick around 1,500 until you come to a stop. It's designed this way for emissions.

I didn’t do a idle relearn and the revs stay at the shift point. Like when you shift from 1st to 2nd and your rpms are at 3000 it will stay there while shifting

I really dislike this feature. Makes clutchless shifting a pain.

Blame California...

What is the idle relearn procedure?

I dunno the specific ford procedure but I just disconnect the battery for 30 minutes, then reconnect and start the truck, let it warm up, then cycle the AC a few times, then go for a 10 minute drive.

Really just need to clear the computer so it adapts to the new parts...

My '03 Sunfire probably did the same thing. I never had an issue shifting without the clutch. BUT, I usually shifted well above 2000 RPM. Usually more like around 3000. I found that the trick was to go into neutral, let the RPMs drop 500 RPM, and then hit the next gear. USUALLY, it went in like butter, but if my timing was off a bit, it resulted in anywhere between a hard shift, and grinding into gear.

Little update, so today I did the idle relearn and it seemed to fix the high rpms while shifting until I turned my heat on. I’m getting the same high revs while shifting while heat is running but when I turn it off the RPMs drop as should in between shifts. Has anyone encountered this problem before?!??

Which heat setting? One that engages the A/C, like defrost?

They all activate the AC compressor on a 98' ?

Not all. Mine did not activate the A/C in Dash, floor, and dash and floor settings. But it was a 2.5 Lima and not a 3.0, so there may have been a difference. My 2011 turns it on for everything but Dash only and floor only.
