ok, just bought a stock 1996 2.3 5speed ranger from my dad for $800. New used engine and he also put in a brand new clutch and slave cylinder. nice little beater truck.

anyway, its had a high idle problem since a few months after he put the new engine in it. I grabbed a tach cluster from an explorer and put in it and sure enough the idle is at 1500rpm.

There are no engine codes.

He replaced the IACV with a new one and he replaced another sensor he doesnt exactly remember what. He said its hard to get to and has a hose coming out of it that is really hard to put back on (wow, really good description dad). Its not the PCV valve either apparently according to him. He doesnt think its a ACT sensor or IAT sensor. so who knows.

anyway, I'm leaning to a vacuum leak at this point and will check hoses this afternoon.

any other things to look around at or tests I can perform to try to diagnose this problem??

The other sensor that your dad replaced - was it by chance the egr solenoid? It sets behind the engine (driver's side), has a two wire harness connector plus a two hose vacuum connector. With no codes, you're starting at a good point by checking for vacuum leaks. Good Luck.

well, he called me back and said it was on the firewall instead?? lol.

I think this truck is speed density and if it is then the most likely sensor on the firewall would be the BAP sensor and I know they usually have a vacuum line going to them...

I'll just have to wait until this afternoon and check when I get home.

If I cant find it then I'll just let the truck run and spray starting fluid around to see if there's a vacuum leak.

yeah, I'll try not to blow myself up haha

Your 2.3 EFI has high idling problems but mine has terrible idling problems. Mine idles great at first but then idles down to 600 rpm then up to 800 rpm and so on. But then after awhile the idle drops down to 400 rpm and then to 600 rpm. I dont know what could be causing this. Plus when it idles from 400-600 rpm it wants to die when i press the gas (or get close to it). But for now im just going to live with it until I put a 2.8 liter in it later this year that I bought for $50. Plus i just want more power.

yeah, as for me. I just want to get all the bugs sorted out of this thing first and then I'm just going to toss a spare turbo setup from my svo on it and see how long it lasts haha

ok, me and my dad are idiots. last night after cranking it with the tach cluster...I only let it run about a minute...never left open loop. sigh.

cranked it today after looking for about 10 minutes around the engine bay for a loose or open vacuum line. sprayed starting fluid at each vacuum point, nothing.

sat for a second thinking while it ran...suddenly heard it throttle down. checked the tach, yep, around 800ish showing. about that time felt the radiator hose and it had just started cyclinging and getting warm. but damn it felt fast. it had a small exhaust leak though.

I jumped under the truck and used the hand method and felt for air in the exhaust. about midway through the cat on the bottom. I just shut it off and stuck a screw in the hole and cranked the truck back up. silent as a windbreeze.

I'll be replacing the cat next week with a 2.5" universal from summit and a 2.5" flowmaster single out for when I toss the turbo setup on this, at least the exhaust will be ready.

and I think with at least 171k on the cat and it making noise by rusting out...its probably mostly clogged and giving me the highway acceleration problems....

cool deal.

nevermind, I'll be ordering 3" stuff tomorrow haha. found my extra 3" factory elbow custom 3" downpipe, nice. this has been a good thursday for me. :icon_cheers:

dude, I wonder if I should start a build thread on this?? lol. I cant leave anything alone if my sig says otherwise...

I can see this truck evolving past a turbo dp2.3 into a single turbo 5.0 w/a modified explorer 4r70w w/modified explorer cat5 tow hitch and a dual rear strut tow assembly...just to piss off all the diesel guys at the boat landing :icon_rofl:

but that could never happen...
