I recently bought a 99 ranger for dirt cheap, I bought it to fix and use as a beater but the more I thought about it. The more I wondered about upping the powa... So I thought of doing a 2.3T but then threw that out for a high compression Nitrous build. I bought the truck with a timing issue. And ended up cracking #1 piston, Then towing it home with the rear tires on the road. My buddy put it in 2nd gear so after about 15 miles I popped it in neutral.

Well the following day after getting it home, I pulled the engine. Looks like the bearings where trash and some melted together, I got them out and there is some heat marks on the mains. although looks rebuildable, And I figure due to the iron block I think its ok. I plan on using the crank after getting it polished/turned, new stock rods and im unsure of which pistons? I need to deck the block and heads I know ill get a little compression from that. Then try it out on a 125 shot. Im really only looking for a 13sec pass but ultra reliable.

What stock pistons would give me the highest compression ratio? And any of you running a high compression setup?

The mains polished out nicely, Going to polish the crank tomorrow at my friends shop. Hopefully the lead will come off and save me the $70 to turn it. I also debured some of poor cast residue, And polished the oil gallies. I couldnt get pictures, since its getting dark at 6pm here in Orlando. Will get some soon.

On the what pistons question, You might want forged if you are gonna use NOS. especially a 125 shot.

I can manage with high compression cast pistons, People have problems because mainly they dont know what they are doing, To big of a shot, to much timing, spraying at thewrong times, ect... I was spraying a 150 shot in my 99 Cobra with the crap hyperutectic pistons until I supercharged it. Alot of people from what I see dont know half as much as they think they do and it causes their cars to be sitting in the yard not running. I mainly wanted to know what stock pistons have the flat tops? I think its a n/a 2.3 but not to sure.

ah ok. gotcha. The 2.3 pistons have a different wrist pin height on the piston i think. So if you keep the 2.5 bottom end the 2.3 piston wouldn't work.

I have been looking around also for a set of decent pistons for my 2.5.Everything under the sun for the 5.2 rod and 5.7 but not much for the 5.4.I am probably going with a set of Sealed Pro,s.That one picture kinda fuzzy, did the bearing spin? How much are you thinking of decking the block/I.,m concerning with too much piston coming out of the block,i thought maybe 5-10 just to clean it up.Probably going to whack the head 70-80.My machine shop said most of the 2.3,s that come thur the shop are going 100-125 but I am going to retain the FI.Most of the guys running 2.3,s(oval track) are running carb.Accordding to my numbers,40 over,70 off the head and 10 off the block should put it right about 10.3 to 1

10.3:1 is ok. Im waiting on my rotating assembly to mesure how much I can mill off. I really would'nt mind the piston coming out of the block a little either.
