Got a problem with our headlights. Low beams work fine, but when you hit the high beams both headlights turn off. If you pull the high beam switch, like for passing, they don't change.
Oh ya, it's a 94 Ranger. Thanks everyone

I would check out the multifunction switch first, if not that then the headlight switch.

High beams have separate fuses from the low beams. Check there as well as the high beam relay.

Mine was doing the exact thing, check continuity for your hi beams in the engine compartment, i had a short to ground in the harness somewhere, i just bipassed the wire with a new one now my brights are like new......

i have the opposite problem. my highs work but my lows do not.

Same problem here Blake. Lows dont work. Highs work okay but will turn off when i turn on turn signal. Any help anyone?????

My situation is a little different, lows work fine, but the high beam indicator is on on the dash all the time, and when you turn the brights on they don't turn off, they just get really dim. Could this be a multi-function switch issue as well?

high beam problems on a 88 ranger

I have a 88 ranger the low beams work just fine but the high beams won't wok.
what could it be?

Check to make sure you are not getting power out to the bulbs... then replace the switch.

My problem was a bit different, low beams sometimes didn't work, toggling thru high beams made it work. But then one time that didn't work and neither high or low beams worked. I had to drive the last two miles home without headlights.

It ended up being the switch on the steering column. Bad contact and it was causing the connector to melt. I was lucky I could still make connection on the switch but had to do some repair work on the connector mate including putting a new mate for the one contact. Best not to wait too long if it is the switch.

I almost decided to re-wire and just put a floor switch in since I had trouble finding the multi-purpose switch.

I have the issue with dims are fine but the brights are dim, hated the multi switch on my
89 b II because of the 0 or stop was in the middle for the wipers so use them at night and
best guess where you had it. so I found that the multi switch on a 93 explorer would change out which has stop on the end. Long story short I haven't thought of checking my lights I was so happy about the wiper lay out I forgot.

Had the same problem on my '88, turned out to be a bad wire going into the multi-function switch. Easy fix.
