Ive been reading about HID lights for trucks. Some of the reviews seem to say they dont last long. Any reason why? I was going to get a set and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good set.

Because the cheap kits use cheap parts. Cheap electrical parts don't usually last that long.

Did you read any of the information that says that this is basically illegal, and at the least, irresponsible?

This. And it is illegal regardless of if you "retrofit" or not. Spend the money on something useful and legal.

Here a set of HIDs runs about $50. Every Chinese electronics place has them. A friend of mine bought a set and they lasted about a year or maybe a year and a half. In my opinion they are great if you are behind them and they suck tremendously when they are in an oncoming vehicle on a narrow road. As for the legality here it doesn't matter. They will even let you put the darkest level of window tint on your windshield if you want and many folks do. That is why you see so many cars with HIDs and so many accidents on dark rainy nights.

HID are not illegal, they come in most factory cars. It's 10000k or anything really blue that is illegal. You can get a HID that is pure white like a 4300k or 5000k etc.

They are illegal to install if not fitted in to DOT approved housings.
You can retrofit them into correct housings, but even then I don't think they are still "legal" if the LEO wants to bust your balls as they are not DOT approved, I think DOT is the only "legal" way.

Good lord!!!! Not another HID thread!!!!

Unless the car came with them from the factory, they are illegal even if retrofitted. So even if they say DOT on them, it doesnt mean its legal to use.

Blah blah blah, we know they are "illegal", that wasn't what he asked about.

I loved mine, and they had lasted 1.5 yrs, then I rolled the truck and destroyed them. They were the 35w set from www.vvme.com, I also put their 55w set in my brother's Exploder. Very satisfied.

Just be considerate and use projector housings, I'll keep them from crying anymore, and make them more effective in inclement weather.

Somewhere on here is a write up I did on installing those lights into those housings... Try searching "hid projector"

Its not the colors that make them unsafe its the glare and the throw of the lights that make it unsafe.

I don't understand how a 4300k is not "safe" to other drivers unless you are like a moth and are attracted to light.

Degrees Kelvin is just a color temp its has nothing to do to with how many lumens of light output.

The problem with HID is to SAFELY output the light. there are few factory HID systems that even do a good job that, of putting the light were is need to be and not into incoming traffic or right into your eye when thy are behind you.
