Im my own mechanic ,not that I want to be , but I learn from U Tube and Forums, I cant afford a real mechanic . I have questions about my 1999 Ford Ranger. It is a 2 wh drive xlt 3.0 L V6 . Automatic Transmission . I lost reverse , I took the pan off after I checked and it was overfull , when I went to check it again my dipstick will not go back in I turned it a million times still won't go back in any Idea what I could try ? I already, put the pan back on , overfilled it again , took the pan back off , shoved the dipstick backwards it goes but not from the top . ???Does anyone know how much it is supposed to hold take without the torch converter ?

Not sure why the dip stick won't go back in.

Assuming a 5r44e Tranny? That would be "TorqueConvertor", though "TorchConvertor" may be preferred by some!
PanDrop+Drain+ReFill usually gets about half of the ATF capacity changed,
so to get a near complete ATF change, need to Drain+Refill at least 3 times.
See OwnersManual for full capacity; don't recommend any commercial shop Tranny flush.
Consider swapping out Pan to a new one with a DrainBung+Plug.
Or HandPump 1~2qts at a time from the DipTube & refill, to get a full change over several months.
Gotta get your DipStick fixed first?

I'm not sure how you know it's overfull if you can't get the dipstick to seat?
 
Where does the tube exit the block on this motor and is it possible the gasket is blocking or partially blocking the exit into the pan?

I have seen where a transmission pan gasket has interfered with the insertion path of the fluid dipstick... this is most likely the cause in this case. Not much else it could be.

Time for another Tranny PanDrop+Drain,
get DipStick issue fixed before doing anything else.

PS: the DipTube is usually a 2piece assembly:
~ lower shorter section of DipTube press fits into rightside of Tranny Case, just behind BellHousing, just above PanFlange.
~ upper longer section press fits into lower section & extends up to rightside of the Engine, holding the DipStick.
If something is stuck inside of the DipTube, may be able to push\pull it out from below with TrannyPan removed.

Thank you , I got it back in checked solenoids they are good, dont know why I suddenly lost reverse
 
On loss of pressure in Tranny, Reverse is first to stop engaging; needs higher pressure than Drive.
Could have a blown out ValveBodyGasket; several possibilities.
Did ValveBodyBolts get a retorq while TrannyPan was off?
