I'm a newbe here and I have a 91 ranger 2.3/5speed manual. It has a major leak (oil, that is.) Probably rear main, And a problem wirh major water consumption. I suspect a blown head gasket. The cost to have these items repaired or the time required to repair them myself is prohibative. I already had the rear seal replaced, cost $600.00 but didn't fix the leak.
I found a used engine on Craigs list and bought it. It came with tranny and rear end.
Now I decided to search out year and actual displacement.
It has 2.5L cast into the passenger side near the rear of the block. It also has a tag stuck on the timing belt cover that says:182939 181
under that is: OG195AA
Then lower down is the date 01/07/00
I have not been able to find anything else that would give me a clue as it doesn't have any casting numbers or stamped numbers that I can find.
Can anyone identify this engine and tell me if I can successfully swap it for my stock '91' 2.3.
Or at least tell me what to do to make it work with my 91 computer?
HELP! Dave

Im not exactly sure what needs done to make that engine work, but it is an obdII system, and the crank sensor is different. the older ecu wont work to my knowledge.

There's ways to make the EDIS ignition system I think but it's probably more work than you're looking for. As noted above the crank sensor is different, but if you put both engines side by side and make a template for the old crank sensor from the front of the block you should be able to put it on the new engine (I put one on a '86 turbo engine without many issues) then align the sensor after you install the DIS balancer.

Other than that sit them side by side and compare sensors, if they are different, swap them around as most things are in similar locations and should mount similarly.
