Hey guys i appreciate your help on this: i have an intermittent (some times it happens some times not) rough idle, and it also starts smoking when that happens.i think its something like map, tfi, or o2 sensor,or something like sensor related.:dunno:
Second thing is mi tranny,i had it rebuilt couple months ago and it shifted great, but lately 2nd shift has a delay (as in it revs really high for too long before 2nd shift comes in) and sometimes on longer trips it downshifts to 1st by itself (so again it revs pretty high and its scary if your on the highway),what can be causing this? any ideas?:icon_confused: thanks in advance

First thing I would do is go to a place that will pull codes for free (everywhere does it now, I know auto zone does). Then I would take it back to where the trans was rebuilt and ask them to take a look at it.

On your fuel injected 2.9l engine there will be a fuel pressure regulator(FPR) on the fuel rail on the top of the engine.
The FPR will have a vacuum hose attached, pull off this hose and check if there is gasoline in it, there shouldn't be, if it smells like gas then the FPR diaphragm has a leak.
When that happens raw fuel is sucked into the engine, flooding it, causing rough idle and smoke.
I don't think this would be intermittent but could be when it first starts to leak.

The TFI is the ignition system, it can cause problems when it gets older, read here
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/TFI_Diagnostic.html

O2 sensors causing this would turn on the CEL(check engine light), unless that came on it wouldn't be O2 related

MAP sensor going bad could cause rich mixture but that should cause a CEL as well.

The CEL doesn't always come on for everything, so yes, I would see if you can get the OBD I checked for a history, see if and problems have been recorded by the computer.
