i need to know what my 1989 ford ranger 4x4's rpms are supposed to be at idle and which side of the coil pack is the negative side

800 rpm with Auto trans and 850 with manual trans,at least on my 87 thats what the sitcker under the hood says and the Haynes manual as well for the 2.9L

ok thats what i thought how do you adjust it from 1700 rpms at idle back down to 800

Idle is controlled via the ECU...sends varying voltage to the IAC bypass valve. The IAC is probably dirty and gummed up. Need to clean it. Do a search on the procedure. And do not turn what a lot of people think an idle adjustment screw on the throttle body linkage.
