I need some help with this 80's model, I think its a 2.3 but it could also be a 2.0 block does anyone know how to tell the difference between the two? the stamped code on it is almost illegible. It has the two piece rear main seal.

Vin would help, or use the vin lookup in the tech section.

Any other info????

No VIN from the vehicle it came out of, just have the block

Well I can't help here but looks like my 2.3L.

You could measure the BORE and Stroke of the cylinders and let me know and I can tell you.

The bore is the diameter of the circular chambers cut into the cylinder block.

The stroke is the length the piston travels from BDC to TDC. So put the piston in the cylinder and then measure from the top of the piston to the top of the block.

I know someone can just look at it and tell you though.

Since you are going to rebuild this...lay the head gasket from either 2.0 or 2.3 over the head and that will tell you exactly what engine it is...as long as you know what gasket you are putting over it...and I would recommend the 2.3 gasket in either case...it will be slightly larger than the 2.0 piston so you will see a small gap around the piston hole...if you have the 2.0 engine...

I hope that made sense...but it is the only other way to tell what block you have.

Well, I can see the problem from here, and I'm hundreds of miles away.

Someone stole your pistons! It won't run without them.

Really, check the 'sticky' at the top of this section...

......................................2.0........ .2.3 Early....2.3 Late.....2.5
Bore...............................3.520........3. 780.........3.780......3.780

The bore makes the difference, and you should be able to tell 3.5" from 3.75{thatza quarter inch more or less}.
I would not put money into a 2.0, but I'm be likin' smore power & torque, at the cost of a few bits of fuel extra.
Locally, you can get a complete 2.3 for ~$400, and newer ones cost more, such as the 2.5. Getting a used engine of that vintage is significantly less expensive than parts & gaskets and machine costs to repair an older one.
Two piece seals are as follows,{from the sticky}:

Rear main seal changed from a two piece to a one piece design in ’86.

Go poke around here:

for the full montie.

Thanks Tomw

I didn't know you could just measure the bore. Thanks for the info.
