I have an 85 ranger 4x4 with the 2.8. I have been trying to get the timing set on this damn thing for over 2 months now. I have the duraspark set up on it. I have pulled the timing cover off and reset the timing marks on the gears put it all back together, had the carb rebuilt, and put new cap, plugs and wires on it....it continues to not fire and today it is spitting gas out of the top of the carb....wth!! ive done everything i can think of...hoping i can get some suggestions on what it might be and what i can do with out having to pull out the entire engine to rebuild it or something lol.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

One thing you can try is have someone crank on the starter and with the timing light look at the timing mark on the damper pully switch the timing light to different plug wires until you see your timing mark on the damper. Use that tower on the distributor cap for number one plug and set the firing order from there. The more difficult but proper way to set the distributor is stick your finger in #1 plug hole and with a socket rotate the crank clockwise until you feel compression. then line TDC on the damper to the pointer the thick groove i believe its marked TC. Slowly lift your distributor and watch how far the rotor turns you want the rotor to point at 11 oclock when the dizzy is all the way down. It usually takes a time or three to get it correct because you have to line up the oil pump shaft also. So extimate how far it will turn back to 11 oclock and lightly press don on the dizzy as you turn the crank until the oil pump shaft lines up and the dizzy drops all the way down. Then find TDC on number one cyl again and check that the rotor is pointing to the #1 tower on the dizzy cap. Normally if it spits fuel out the carb you around 180 degrees out. Another thing to be aware of is you want plenty of room to adjust the timing if you point the vacuum advance pod toward the passenger door you should have plenty of room to set the timing to 10 DBTDC. Get under the front of the engine and turn the crank so you can see the marks, with a yellow or white crayon mark one notch back from 12 degrees. Preset your idle air needles 2 1/2-3 turns out from lightly seated. Adjust the idle air with a tach or vacuum guage for highest lean rpm or vacuum pressure.

Had the same problem with my old 2.8 when I durasparked it. I though I was out 180 but I wasnt. Instead I rotated all my plugs wires on my cap one over and my truck fired right up.

As far as fuel, it's due to the engine not consuming it when you have been cranking on it and it has flooded the carb.
