Help with timing

I have a 96 2.3 ranger that I just did a full engine rebuild on. Just one problem it wont run. It will start and sputter for about 10 seconds then it dies. It seems like timing problems but I have set the timing according to the haynes manual several times and still the same problem starts sputters and dies and no response from the throttle and nothing I do will keep it running long enough to get a reading with the timing light. Can anyone help me? I would drive off a cliff but my truck is not running. Thanks

Is the intake fitted and tight? If the MAF doesn't see airflow, The engine will sputter and die.
Timing has to be set with the plug removed on that engine. (A little gray plug, usually over the drivers' side front wheel well ... or high on the firewall.) The plug is attached to the wiring harness on a dead end loop, and disables the ecu timing setting for base timing adjustment.

I know you did a full rebuild but I gotta ask anyway. have you done a compression check? might have leakdown in a cylinder or two.

do you have fuel pressure at the rail?? you sure you getting spark to the plugs? I'd check one plug from each coil. check all grounds and wiring as well. and it did run before you tore it apart right?

Help with timing.

I definately have compression and spark. Fuel pressure is at 40 psi at the rail, and the MAF is seeing airflow. Its acting like the plug wires are all hooked up wrong. Haynes says to just disconnect the coils while setting the timing but I will try unpluging the entire wire harness like you said. Thanks for the help.

Which plug are you talking about exactly? The wiring harness itself is gray and plugs into the fire wall or are you talking about the small plug with what looks like a shunt cap on it? If so what do I do with the truck once I unplug it? I tried unplugging the wire harness at the firewall and still the same problem. Its acting like the Spark plugs are all in the wrong sequence. Thanks for your help.
