Help with new subs


I'm not really looking for anything that will blow the doors off, I just want a little bit of bass. I don't really want to spend more than $200 for the system, but I guess if I had to I could hold off a little longer on the lift and tires and buy a more expensive one.

Electronic equipment isn't something that I'm good with, so I would prefer to buy a kit or complete set so that I don't need to search all over for the different components.
 
well for $200, your best bet is to buy everything used. all the package deals your going to find are junk. a decent 4awg amp kit is going to run $30-40. a sheet of 3/4 mdf shouldnt be more than $30. speaker terminal <$5. bottle of glue <$5. a few clamps from harbor freight shouldnt be more than $20. thats already over a third of your budget. add another $1-200 to your budget then you could some very nice bass in your truck. for $200 all your going to get is that anoyying ghetto bass in a not so air tight enclosure. good luck

I have enough wood and materials to make a decent box, I'm really good with tools so I won't have any trouble making an air-tight box.

lol dont build a box a lil bass is 8'' or 10'' a premade box will run you about 50 bucks you can get a sub for about 70 80 eclips makes a good cheep subs or even a pioneer from wally world isnt bad and they will hold up. and there in the 50 range. $100-$130 amp shouldnt be to hard to find. just stay away from the explode, visonik, v^3 or duel and the wiring harness is prolly 20 -30. for one 10 you dont need more the 300w but check the specs. and anything in a kit is not the best idea. look for used or older model stuff from a dealer. normally on sale tell them how much your looking to spend. they can prolly help you out. but dont be afraid to look at walmart for wiring harness and the like. with the exception of Sony explode if you find it at walmart and there name has been about for 10 plus years its prolly ok for what you want JVC pioneer ect.

this entry level MTX system will sound 1000 X better than any system from a auto parts store.

I dont know if you have an EXT cab or single. if you have a single a 6 or 8" powered bazooka will suit you best. and can be had at Crutchfield.
 
Yeah, I have an extended cab. That system looks nice, I like it!
 
crutchfeild is over priced if you like the set up they have it can be gotton cheeper some were else. and that box id 5/8 partical bored:icon_rofl: when it comes to boxes small stuff like one 8'' or bass tube can get away with have 1/2 MDF and make sure its MDF largers boxes are made with 3/4 MDF and to make my 15'' they had to use one inch for most of it. if its not MDF it will tear its self apart.

mxt may be good for what your looking for but that have kinda gone south along with sony and RF
they used to be really good but they never kept up with the newere stuff and are now just entry level. and once you find out how easy it is to do/change/mod/ and upgrade (get the bug) you may dislike your mtx but thats just my 2 cents.

the subs are rated at 200 watts RMS. the mono amp is pushing 250. the matched box will hold up just fine.

The guys talking about possibly buying a system from a parts store. no matter how far south you think MTX has gone (and i disagree) its still better than any no name brand. Sony on the other hand has never been a force in the mobile audio industry. "RF" i dont even want to talk about overpriced CRAP!!

Crutchfield is great. The system i have now isnt from them. but, 4 or 5 years ago i bought a shitty US Acoustics amp from them. positive/negative wires touched, fried my amp. called Crutchfield told them it went out, sent it out (postage paid by them) and got a new amp in 2 days. best no questions asked service ANYWHERE!:icon_thumby:

and CF is great. but they are over priced a lil. but that money goes to good customer service. and people that know what there talking about and thats a quote from the GM at my local store.

but if hes on a budget paying for good customer service may not be an option for him.

just becuase hes on a tight budget doesnt meen you should steer him towards crap, i.e. premade boxes. ive never seen one thats air tight. also theyre not built specifically for any sub. so i see no problem with building his own box that matches the manufacturers specs. especially if he has the tools and desire to do so. ebay is going to be his best friend.
 
Just my 2 cents, spending money on a decent name brand will pay off in the end with better sound quality and longer life. I dont mean spend every dime but comperative shop. Also keep in mind when searching for amps, some advertise MAX power and some will do it in rms. As a general rule max is double the rms. If you buy a generic premade box stick with a sealed box as ported will not be tuned for just any sub. The main advantage to building your own is to make it fit your truck and your subs more specifically. Just trying to help out some.

but making your own box is harder then it sound. i dont want to disswade any one. but to make your own in a tight fitting space with tight angles, and inter dementions it can make head aches, and i dont even what to getting into ported boxes. and carpeting a box and having it look good is a task in its own.

just because they LOOK good doesnt mean theyll sound good. the only premade box that ive heard that sounded good were the loaded jl ones. building your own box is quite simple if you have all the tools. you can play around with the online subwoofer enclosure calcualators and design one that meets the manufacturers specs and fits in the vehicle where you want. i think i spent around $30-40 building mine. could have saved a bit if id know they sell smaller "hobby" mdf sheets. i guess if he decided to go the premade route he should definitly invest in some silicone and pack those interior seams with it. if the premade is too big, he can add pieces of scrap wood to the inside. or if its a little too small, some polyfill should do the trick.
