The pulley that the swing arm on the garage door connects to that pulls the garage door up and down the track to open and close the door is stopped at the end of the track closest to the garage door. When you push the button, the pulley moves forward like it's closing the door, bows the track down, and then stops. It does not return back to the garage door opener motor assembly.

One day I went to open the garage door not knowing that the slide lock was engaged with the track. It tried to lift the door and then got itself bound up. I pulled the emergency release to open the garage door, but the pulley won't move back to the motor. It only wants to go forward.

I have no idea how to fix it or reset it.

Anyone have any suggestions?

All I can offer is try and find the manual :/

They have a little plastic gear that drives the carrier. If it bound up it probably stripped the gear. I had the same problem when I moved in here several years ago. I kept putting it off till finally got tired of manually opening the door. Was a cheap part. Did have to order it in but was real easy to fix. Just start taking some covers off and run it with them off and you should see tha issue. I wanted kick myself for putting it off so long when I saw how simple it was to fix. The little gear just drives the chain that pulls the carrier.

I pulled the emergency release to open the garage door,
I've heard that some of these emergency releasees are a "one time" use and must be replaced if you pull it. Also if it has springs at the top, check them. they can be broken and it's hard to tell if they are. The repair guy for my MIL's garage door had to pull the spring before he knew it was broke. Pulling the spring was his last resort to find the problem, after he inpected it with a flashlight, looking for cracks. It came out in two peices.

He said, "they just break sometimes" He also said that sometimes ppl get lucky and don't have to replace the emergency release mechanism, but most ppl do anyways.
That’s weird. I’ve never heard about the release latch being a single use deal. I’ve used them multiple times and I’ve known people who have gone for years using it instead of fixing the opener. Maybe that applies to a particular brand.

Maybe. my MIL had all kinds of issues with her garage doors after she pulled her emegency pull rope.

Samehere.

After I release mine I have to cycle the opener again to make initial contact with the disconnect. Then I have to manually pull the rope rearwards to fully engage the trolley chain. Never heard of a one time only disconnect; that sounds more like something Audi or Porsche would do.

Motor has a thermal switch that opens, shuts off motor, when it draws too many amps, same as power window motors have

But there should also be adjustable Limiter switches on the unit for "open and closed", and an automatic toggle switch
Toggle switch changes motors direction each time it gets a "start" signal from hard wire button or fob
So if you hit the button and door starts to open if you hit the button again it will either stop or start to close the door, depends on the model
But in any case it should reverse direction on a 2nd or 3rd button push

Yours is not doing that
Without the model number it would be hard to say what is happening but for sure the automatic toggle is not working

I also have never heard, or read about, a "one time use" release lever, its just a pin or tab release with a spring so no reason for it to be "reset"
But a cheap one could break, lol, making it a "one time release" :)

I’ve been using my emergency release for years with no problem. The limit switches in the opener are messed up and won’t adjust properly. Fixing it or replacing it hasn’t been high enough on the priority list to do anything about it.
