Have 2000 ranger 2.5L , had engine rebuilt runs fine but keeps showing camshaft pos. sensor. All wiring checks out, timing is correct. The guy that rebuilt the engine says that the computer needs to be Flashed.
I can't remember where I was told this ,or if it is B.S. but the cam. shaft pos. sensor actually is run off oil pump? That the rebuilders damaged the sensor around the oil pump. Could some one please elaborate or let me know where I might find more information.
Thanks

Cam sensor runs off oil pump sprocket. Oil pump sprocket is driven by timing belt.

Here it is:

You probably get the best view from the driver side wheel well

Two thoughts: 1) Did they set the auxiliary sprocket timing? That would affect cam position 'sensed', and throw things off. 2) Did they damage the cam position sensor? If so, that also would affect ignition timing and also injector timing. It might run, but not run well if either/both were off. SEFI - sequential fuel injection- fires the injectors individually for each cylinder, and it is timed. Ignition timing would affect when the spark fires, with multiple possible outcomes.

Thanks u all
TomW I don't know about the aux.sprocket, but know the cam. sensor was replaced.
engine runs fine no hesitation on acceleration.
how do u check aux. sprocket & where is it?
Thanks again

If you look at the image posted, #1 points to the 'front' of the oil pump. There is a sprocket that the timing belt drives that turns the oil pump. On the backside of the pump is the mount for the cam position sensor. Because the sensor is NOT linked to the cam upon installation, the sprocket has to be timed, to both the crankshaft position and to the camshaft position. If it is mistimed, or the cam position sensor damaged, as you noted, then you may get a code from the OBD-II system. If the techs damaged the sensor when they installed it or the engine into the truck, they should have replaced it. If they did not, and it was damaged, either do it yourself, or get them to do it.
You check the timing by the diamond and triangle on the edge of the sprockets, being at specific pointer-indicated positions with the crankshaft at the TDC timing mark on the pulley or the crankshaft keyway at 12:00.
What code are you getting, and what are the 'words' in the explanation?
