Today i got a A/C system on a trade.
Its from a 94 Explorer R134a system, i found the problem why it does not work the evaporator pipe that goes to the dryer has fatigue and broke.

I am going to replace the dryer/o-rings, orifice tube and evaporator.
my questions are

1. Is there anything else i should look out for or replace while i am at it?

2. Since i have to get a new evaporator (junk yard), can i get a housing that will give me more room to work on the motor. its seems that the newer trucks have more room there.

3. Are variable orifice tubes really help as much as i have read? or anything else i can do to make it more efficient?

I have another question.
The Ford A/C sticker it says 1lb 8oz of R134a and 8oz of oil.
Chiltons says 1lb 10 oz and 7oz of oil
idq says 2lb 4oz and 7oz of oil.

idq is close for the grand am at 2 oz less

how do you know what is the right amount, so confusing

Most a/c systems don't hold near 2 lbs, 1lb 8oz sounds about right, don't have the a/c book on hand but I'm betting with 2+lbs your high side pressures would get pretty high, just my opinion.

Unless i did the math wrong since thy listed as 36oz

36oz would be 2lbs 4oz, 16oz=1lb, still I say stick to 1lb 7-8oz and I guarantee it'll be cold.

Does anyone one if the pulleys are different for a A/C truck? I got a new belt and it does not fit, I think the block and accessories are from a 95 Ranger.
I gave the guy my none A/C belt and it did no fit his 94 Explorer.

Since i am replace the evaporator. is there a housing that will take less room? I figure now be the time to do it.

Well everything is in and working, I do have a few questions.
I am using a Red Orifice tube, PAG 46, and all new o-rings.
FYI Get Motorcraft o-rings next time. i hated to have a bag of o-rings maybe enough to do 3 or for systems, anyways.

It was around 95° when i finished up i put 24oz of r134a in the system.i get 55° at the vents, fan on high and recirculate at idle or freeway. its seems it might need a tad more r134a. there is every little condensation on the accumulator.

Here is a photo of the gauges. What kind of pressures am i looking for?

I need to check my work Van too, on my way home its was getting 60° at the vents.Max AC and freeway.I might need to check the condenser, it might have a lot of junk in it, as it seems to not cool as well in the hotter weather

What was the weather like when that picture was taken?

It was around mid morning Sunny and around 95°
I should have taken a more careful look at the outside temp when i took the pic, sorry

What was the weather like when that picture was taken?

I'll get a new pressure reading and get the exact inside and outside temps too, if that helps.
