I just picked up a 1987 4x4 std cab swb Ranger last weekend for $400. It has been painted at sometime. The body is pretty good for an 87 in northern Michigan. Needs u joints, axle joints, and steering linkage parts. Runs rough at idle. Sounds like it has a miss. Haven't had time to check it out yet though. Drove it about 100 miles home though.

Anyway, back to my question. I ran the VIN with the decoder here on the site and it says it is a 2.0 and 2wd. I know it is not 2wd, so that makes me wonder if the engine is 2.0 or 2.3. Is it true that all 2.0's are carbed? If so, this is a 2.3 because it is EFI. Please let me know if this is correct.

Thanks,

Steve

all 2.0's are carbed

it's possible the cab was swapped at some point, which would explain the VIN missmatch

Thanks. The PO told me it was a 2.3, and that is what I was hoping it was. I had thought about the cab being swapped or even the engine being changed at some point. If that happened they must have known what they were doing because it looks like a pretty clean swap.
