Hey guys, I just 3 weeks ago replaced every single component to do with my clutch. Master, Slave, release bearing, and clutch kit. Its been running great ever since... Until last night..
I was on a trip from edmonton to calgary (3 hour drive) and about an hour in, it popped out of 5th and started making a horrible grinding noise in neutral. I immediately pulled over to a safe place and got under the truck. I seen that somehow my bleed valve had been loosened and could be moved with my fingers..
I tighened it back up and did a full clutch bleed on the side of the highway at 1:30 in the morning. Once I was satisfyed that there was no air in the system i fired it up and tried to take off. (it has not leaked or drained as of 16 hours later)
It would make a terrible grinding noise as if my spline was just breaking teeth off (or trying to). I took it out of gear and noticed that with the clutch out in neutral it was making a different grinding noise. (see attached video).
HOWEVER, while in neutral with the clutch pushed in, it was silent as could be..

What could be my problem? My only guess is that my internal slave had somehow come unmounted and was free floating?
When i look through the small inspection port i can see that it is engaging, but ive never seen that happen before so really i can only tell that it moves about an inch when the clutch is pushed.

Any advice is appreciated. It will be a week or so before i have the time and tools available to me to crawl under the truck and pull the tranny to investigate.
Here is a video taken with my cell phone which contains the noise i am hearing in neutral, when i let the clutch out

I believe that your input shaft bearing just died. The slave is probably fine. You will want to put a new one in when you replace the clutch when you fix or replace the tranny.

Sounds like your transmission took a dump on you.

Is the "input shaft bearing" also called the pilot bearing? because you know it just occured to me that was the only part i didnt change during the clutch change... i was told that as long as it was tight, there was no need to change it...

No, Pilot bearing is what the tip of the input shaft of your transmission slides into. It's a little round bearing in the back of the motor.

The input shaft bearing is part of your transmission. If it goes bad you will need a used transmission or a total rebuild of your current transmission.

Jesus.. how will i know for sure? also, if it was infact my input shaft, how does that explain the bleed valve being forced open?

Since you just worked on the clutch parts, I would suspect the clutch parts. Take it back apart and see what's going on.

What i am now suspecting is that due to the fact that ive been driving like a jackass (burning out and dropping the clutch at 3000rpm) since replacing the clutch with a stronger one, that ive simply made the transmission the weaker link.. not that i wont pull it all apart to check, i just wont be able to do that for awhile. I was just gathering advice beforehand here. :)

It could be a failure inside the transmission if you've been driving it like that.

How was the fluid level in the transmission?

Hopefully for your sake it is something clutch related, but from the sound of the video, it sure doesn't sound like it.

Tranny fluid was absolutely full.... ah well.. doing that 2.3 turbo swap into my other truck isnt looking like such a bad plan right about now..

It COULD be a hosed release bearing or loose slave, but I agree it sounds more like the input bearing. No clutch parts can cause you to pop out of gear.

Not good news.

Ive got another 5 speed manual in my other truck, truck is equipped with a (cracked head) 2.9 and its an ext cab.. I havnt really looked, but off the top of your heads. Could I use this tranny? also, if it is suitable, will it matter that it came out of a split driveshaft ext cab?

Yes, but unless it's a 90 or newer it's a much weaker FM145/146 and will probably die fast behind your 4.0. And the FM145 (87-older) is shorter than the M5OD.
