hey i have a 97 mazda b4000 should be same as the ranger, anyway my check engine light was on and i had to bring it to the dealership, anyway they scanned for codes, and said my systems running lean due to a sticking purge control valve. has anyone here ever replaced that? and how hard is it to replace as i want to do it myself so i dont to pay labour. the part is 88$ and i ordered it so it should be here in a couple days, help apprieciated.

Sticking open?

The charcoal canister stores fuel tank vapors and when the time is right, the purge vlave allows them into the intake manifold. They are saying that basically a vacuum leak at that valve is causing the engine to run lean? You might want to check to make sure the canister isn't coming apart inside and that chunks of shit aren't plugging the valve.

On my '91 motor it's just in a vacuum line and hanging free. It has been giving me a code for years.

I had to change this out a few months ago, it's about the simplest fix I've ever done. Check the arrow on the old purge valve showing the direction of flow then just disconnect the vacuum lines and one electrical connector and put the new one in, making sure the arrow is pointing the same direction.
