HELP sticker shock on new tires!!!!!!!

i just went through this process with my wife's car last week. i went with 'just tires'. she has the same size tires you're lookin for. i got her some kelly's for $557, mounted and balanced, 50K warranty and lifetime mounting and balancing. they had cheaper ones, but they had no warranty and no lifetime mounting/balancing. plus, they have financing that's interest free for 6 months

yeah, you can pay less at a small time local mechanic shop, but then add on how many times you get them rotated and balanced for the life of the tire. you may save $100-200 on the tires, but you'll pay way more than that to have them rotated and balanced for the time that you own the tires.
plus, say my wife and i are in pittsburgh and we have a problem with a tire, we can take it to any just tires and they'll have our warranty info and can fix it for free or replace the tire for free.

UF, hehe I can usually smash some prices.

88Eddie, I will rotate them for free with an oil change, balancing I will charge for after 6 months, but usually they don't need rebalancing on a street vehicle for quite a while, if you do it right the first time.

I paid $535 for all 4 of mine, 235/75/16 Baja Widetrack A/T, at Discount tire here in IN. That is with warranty.

I got mine (Firestone Destination A/T, 215/75-15) through my local mechanic (Weed Family Auto in Concord, NH), mounted & balanced for $125 each, $500 for the set.

That's a good deal in my book.

Thanks for all the great responses, you never know what topic will spark peoples interest. I looked on direct tire and they have the goodyear eagle ls for $78 delivered. I am usually a good frugal shopper, for some reason i assumed the local shops would be more money. I did not realize the mark up on tires. Direct tire has a set of tires on nice wheels balanced and deliver for less than my original sears quote. I will look on the tirerack.com also. I think that is the company that popularized the "quarter test" instead of the "penny test"

Get on craiglist, too many tires to count ontheir. ALways go used if possible. NEVER NEVER NEVER buy sneakers or tires at sears. LOL Way too much profit margin trying to survive, LOL

I have bought tires off of craigslist but i am rethinking that now. the tres I am looking for will go on the wife's 2006 vibe. the tires on there now are uniroyal tigerpaw and there is plenty of life left on them, however they have "scalloped" so that the steering wheel shakes at 65. I got them moved around and rebalanced and it is better but far from perfect

Sounds like you have allignment issues. Even so, you'll deifinitly want new tires before winter.

I went down to the local 3 man repair alingment shop he quoted me $125 plus balanceand tax per Goodtear Eagle LS. 205/55/16

Ok you can do the math, but if you are stuck on name brands then add this up goodtear eagle ls $63.57 ea, 20.00 ea for mount and balance, 3.50 in state tire tax and disposal, plus tax, well i'll total it 374.40 total out of my door for 4 tires

mentalbreakdown...what type of "shop" do you have. I just went to the local small shop that does brakes and alignments etc. the guy quoted me $125 for the goodyear eagle ls plus balance and tax.

I havebeen going to a used tire place about 15 mi away. When ya don't have much money it's a big help. 4 car sized tires for $126 mounted and balanced and they do a good job. Some of the tires aren't great and it's hard to get 4 that match but when you don't have the money for new......:)

Gas prices are up and rubber is made from oil....make since now, Bro.
