i know this is the wrong place but i going to the pick and pull tommor and i want to know what i need to change on the exsplore 8.8 to fit in my 99 ranger and it is a 8.8 in the ranger :dntknw: thanks guys

4 wheel drive offroad and street and how does that make a differnce? that was a 7.5 to a 8.8 i am doing a 8.8 to a 8.8

gear ratio needs to be the same front and rear. the ranger is a spring over and the explorer is a spring under.

Yo,
If you have a 4x4, then you need to make sure you are getting the same gears in the new 8.8 as in the old one. If the gears are not the same, then you will damage your 4x4 when you put it in 4x4. Your front tires will be trying to go one speed, and your back tires will want to go another speed.

For most of the street crowd, the axle will mostly bolt in with the leaf springs going under the axle. Most all off-road rangers run the springs over the axle, this will require a flip kit or re-welding the spring perches onto the top of the axle.

This link will help you find out which axle has which gears.

i know that but do i need to make different shock mounts

Offroad and street? I think that link hints that a 8.8 to 8.8 should use your driveshaft as a straight up bolt in, and you have to weld perches and get your angles and everthing right.

Look around im pretty sure someone just did a write up on this.
Good Luck

do you have the off road package on your truck? If so, then why do the swap?

Yo,
You will need to make new shock mounts, fabricate some e-brake stuff, weld the new perches on, and some people have had to shorten the driveshaft. Let us know what you find.

Good luck!

i got the 8.8 disk brakes 4.10 and LS 31 spline for 200 :headbang: now time to make it fit in the truck :icon_welder: thanks for all the help i will post some picks of the fab work and install

would the gears,L/S,and 31 spline axles change out of the other 8.8? and if ur truck has drums i think you will have to do some break mods, i think anyway.also ur front diff gears will need to be 4.10's now

In addition to the 31 spline axles, the explorer 8.8s are a little wider than the ranger 8.8s, and used larger wheel bearings. So if you wanted to make the switch without the explorer axle, it would be tough. (although not impossible)

the front diff is 4.10
