I've been chasing an issue for a few weeks now on my 3.0 Ranger.

I have a check engine light that reads as a cylinder 1 misfire. The engine runs rough for the first minute or so when cold then runs fine. I've replaced plugs and wires and checked for vacuum leaks, which alleviated the problem to some extent but not completely. If I clear the check engine light, the problem goes away for 2 or 3 days then returns.

I also have a raspy squealing sound coming from the water pump area (which was replaced about 9 months ago), and I don't know if that's related.

This is driving me nuts. Please help!
 
What year is it? Have you tried looking at the injector for that cylinder? I believe resistance should be 12-16 ohms? (correct me if I'm wrong) Later DIS equipped 3.0's had some issues with the Camshaft synchronizer which could be the squealing noise.
 
Syncro is in the back on that engine I think.

Have you changed your oil since your ignition components were replaced?

How do you drive?

Have you done a compression check?



If you managed to gas wash the cylinder from a bad plug or wire now that the root cause has been corrected you need to change the oil to get any remaining fuel out of it and then drive the living piss out of it to try and clear the cylinder wall and rings of any fuel wash.
 
I don't know about gas washing the cylinder, because the cylinder wasn't dead. It only misfired when it was cold.

I was wondering, could it be a bad fuel filter causing my problem?
 
you should do a compression check
 
Try some really good injector cleaner like 44K. That fixes these types of problems probably 75% of the time- well at least postpones them for awhile.

I'll check the EGR valve and might try a compression test. As for injector cleaner I've run 2 bottles of Lucas through with no change.
