i am working on a 88 ford ranger xlt single cab i pulled the tranny to change out the front seal ended up changing the flywheel to there is a part that goes between the back of the flywheel and the crankshaft that broke i need to know that part is i know that it is some type of guide because the front of the torque converter stabs in the front of it but i need too know what that part is called so i know what i am looking for. thanks for any help

Pics would be nice.

If it was the metal ring that sits between the flex plate and crank shaft then it is the flex plate spacer and is known to break and cause other issues.

I dont remember a spacer on my 2.8 between the crankshaft and the torque converter the flex plate just bolts on to the crankshaft but there may be a bushing inside the end of the crankshaft to line the torque converter center.

I have yet to see an auto trans with a pilot bushing, but I also haven't taken one out of an early RBV.

I have also found that pilot bushings/bearings are not really needed. I have run without them before.

The engine currently in my BII has no pilot bearing in it, and I am having not problems from it. The engine was run for 10K miles before I got it without a pilot bearing (I know because there isn't one in it now and I didn't take one out). I also have the trans that was originally on the engine and it doesn't have any issues either.

The plate spacer is needed, the starter will grind and stay engaged without it. A pilot bushing is nice, but not needed. Also, a pilot bushing will be about the diameter of a quarter. The spacer will be the size of a small pancake.

Now would be the time for a crankshaft seal also while you have it apart if you havent already swapped it out?
