i have a 99 ford ranger xlt the battery has been dead for awhile so i let it charge overnight and part of today and i also tried using my WRX battery and it still doesnt work. so i just went to fire it up and the fuel pump starts to prime then it stops. The engine doesnt even crank or make any noises. it flashes theft on my dash could it be because i removed the airbags, but not all the required components? or because i took out my radio and now have nothing in its place?

Please help!

Is your battery even holding a charge? Sound like to me that you dont have enough juice in you battery to start it if it aint turning over. Possibly a bad cell. try that and go from there.....

Edit: sorry didnt see you used another battery. maybe your cables are bad. or you have a bad connection.

Try turning on the headlights and see if they dim when you try to start it- If they don't it ain't the battery or the cables. If they do it is starving for power.

I'd be looking at the neutral safety switch (or clutch switch if manual) and the pats (theft light) system. You said it is blinking when you try to start it? It should be on steady when you turn the key on if it is reading the key properly. You can jump it at the soleniod and by-pass the pats if thats what is wrong.

And BTW, the fuel pump priming up for a few seconds and getting quiet is normal.

If the theft light is flashing fast you have a problem with the PAT system. Try a different key or if you have more than one Ford key on the key chain remove it.
