I have a 44 from a 78-79 f250 that I plan on using in my sas...

Should I narrow it or go fullwidth?

I wanted to go fullwidth at first, but now as I'm thinking of moving the leaf perches in, it doesn't seem like the driver side perch will want to go into the diff any farther.

So I'm thinking about bringing it 6 inches down and using an aftermarket EB passenger axleshaft (my fullsize one is rusted anyway).

I'm thinking this way I'll end up saving a little money by being able to re-use my 8.8 already in the truck and it will be one less thing to rebuild and swap in.

From reading the article in the tech library, narrowing seems easy enough, but I am a lil paranoid about not getting it lined up right... should be able to though.

Also, I'm assuming they don't have a 5x4.5 to 8 lug adapter at all do they :icon_rofl:

TEE REV can make ya the adapter....lol...don't ask why I know, haha.

You can also swap 5/6 lug outers on your D44, run adapters to that or redrill the axle shafts out back for 5 on 5.5".
 
I wanna keep the 8 lug front... I dunno how long I'll run the 8.8 but I figured in the meantime I'd just go Tokyo Drift style :icon_rofl:

Alright guys, new question.

I've been looking at builds, and what steering gear works best? Everyone says toyota box, but which one? I was talking to a toyota guy and he said that I'd need one from an ifs yote, but I keep thinking that I'd need one from a solid axle yote.

Any other ones that would work better? I found an 85 box with all the lines and the pump as well, and I'm not sure if I need to jump on it or not.

gotta be ifs from i think its 86 to 96. Newer than that they went to rack n pinion steering. Not sure about the solid axle yotas but i have not heard of anybody using them. My box is from a 92 I think. Just started puting mine on. If you want to you can check it out in the rbvs under construction under wohlf 16's 99 ranger build, page 3.

I'm runnin a PS box from a 3/4 ton ford van. Turns my meats with no problem, and they're a dime a dozen. Only down fall is they use a rag joint on the steering column. Mine is ripped to shit. Some places sell a conversion joint. A lot of S10s run em.

Don't worry, we're not Pirate here :D Dunno about EG... do you mean EB? Early bronco. Waggy = Jeep Wagoneer or however you spell it. Referring to either springs or d44's. Don't worry I used to wonder what the hell a waggy spring was.

any specific years to look for or no? Best price I can find on a toy IFS box is $90 from a junkyard.

Oh, whoops, I guess I didn't pay attention to the quoted post in your post :icon_twisted:

Yeah, van boxes from the '80s thru mid-'90s I think are all the same (Ford revamped the E-series in '97 IIRC, not sure if the box changed at that time or not). The Toy box seems like a perfect fit to me though, I'd keep looking around for one of those. $90 seems crazy high for a used non-rebuilt part.

Looks like they did, the box on my dad's '02(?) E-450 looks a lot more like the '99up F-250/350 boxes, so that one wouldn't make a good fit due to it not having a flat mounting surface.

Really? Cuz out of the four junkyards I went to, only two had em. One was for $125 and the other was for $90. The last junkyard I went to (owned and operated all by wheelers), the guy there said that 90 was a pretty good price for the steering gear (and he's a yota/chevy guy). I'm sure I could get it cheaper off of cl though.

The jy's around here can be kinda outrageous.

I'm gonna keep lookin.
 
I got a Ford box for $60 once. Maybe because it has a Japanese name on it they automatically tag another 50% onto it (that always seems to be the case when buying new parts from the autoparts store anyway :annoyed: ).

Yeah, try Craigslist. I picked up a steering box and transfercase together some time back from a guy, both for $50 (guy was parting out an Explorer). Toyotas being nearly as common, it's very possibly you might find someone (I do believe 2WD Toyota pickups use the same box as well, I think)

Thanks for the advice... time to play the waiting game. Only things close on craigslist are about $100 with the lines, gear, bracket, and pump... but I don't need the pump, bracket, or lines... I just need adapters for the ford lines from any parts store correct?

I'll check sas'drangers thread again...
