Help me figure this out?

Okay so when Im driving and push the clutch in and dont push on the gas my rpms go up, also when i let the clutch out and push the gas down a little then let of it and dont use the gas or clutch it stays at a constant speed or my rpms rise it varies... Help?

Sounds like sticky idle.

New IAC and some white lithium spray on the throttle linkages is where I would start.

Figured out it was the throttle, but thank you.
Also I will be going to the parts store after I finish posting this to get the IAC.

Oh and your the F*ckin man when it comes to fixing these trucks.

I chased a sticky throttle around for a few years before I found the final solution. It did the same thing yours is doing.

For the longest time my solution was WD-40 down the throttle cable. It would work for a day or two then go right back to it. It can be really frustrating.

Well found out it was the TPS.
I ended up deciding to replace all of this anyway at some time so just knocked it all out at once. Replaced my, O2 Sensor, TPS, IAC, Cap and Rotor.

We used to use these motorcycle brake cable oilers in the bike shop I worked at to lube cables. It was an aluminum "clamp" with a split rubber insert that would clamp around the cable housing to form the outer seal, and also clamp around the cable itself to form an inner seal. Then it had a hole in the side where you could stick the tube coming out of your can of favorite lube in it. Then you could force the lube down the annular area of the entire cable housing - worked like a dream for fixing sticky cables. I had the same kind of problems as you and this worked for me - even though I see it's already resolved.

I was pretty darn close to killing myself in my 88 fullsize Bronco this winter because of a sticky throttle. I was running a little late for work and had the throttle pretty deep and when I let off to slow down for the approaching intersection, it sped up. Immediately, I turned the key backwards and got the truck stopped. Found out a few pieces of salt flew up near my throttle plate and rusted the spring and linkage causing it to stick. A little WD40 and I was good. Nearly crapped my pants there for a minute!

Anyway, that was a little off topic but whatever. I actually have a bad TPS as well. I think it's the root of my erratic idle. Thanks for the post!

My 87's throttle will stick sometimes too. If you get her down to the floor the pedal doesn't always come back up with your foot.


I thought about looking at it once, but then I thought 'Nah, I'll call it cruise control'.
