I lost overdrive in my truck on Saturday (2.3L Automatic 1993).

Is it a bad idea to drive it until I find out why it went out and what could be wrong with it? It shifts fine and fluid level is fine.

I talked to the guy at the transmission shop and he said that when an a4ld transmission looses overdrive it looses all cooling. We are heading to a show in Tennessee (5 hours interstate one way) and I am curious if there is truth to this.

The way I am thinking is if I drive in "D" instead of "Overdrive" how could it hurt anything since I am not using overdrive. And is it true that you loose cooling when you loose overdrive?

If it was my truck I definitely wouldn't be taking it on a five hour one way trip with these sudden issues. I have no idea about the tranny losing cooling without overdrive. I do recall that losing OD was considered the "kiss of death" for the older Ford AOD trannys. Once you lost OD you needed to start looking for a replacement trans.
