1997 ranger with no heat idk why suggestions would help michigan winters are no fun

Have you checked the coolant level yet? Start there.

If the coolant level is right, next step should be check your thermostat. It could be stuck open.

On my 94 the heater core was clogged.I pulled off both heater hoses and flushed the core with a spray nozzle.Heat works great now.Pull off a heater hose at the firewall and see if its filled with goo.

Well, if the coolant level is correct, the next step is to get it up to temp and then grab both heater hoses. If they are the same temp something else is wrong. If one is cold, you need a new core.

Take both hoses for the core off the engine and use a gerden tose to push the junk out in both directions drain it, tie the hoses up and fill it with bleach or oven cleaner and let it sit overnite then flush it again both ways with the hose. If it leaks it needed to be changed anyway. Just be careful where you do the flush and dont get it on you or somthing it can hurt a gravel driveway works.
