Am going to be installing my port and polish heads this weekend and was just wondering if anybody had a few pointers on installing them, do i need to use anything on the threads of the new head bolts? hjow to torque them?

I'd say lightly oil the head bolts before you install them. If you're looking at the passenger side, the torque sequence on the bolts is:

6 4 2 8 <<<top, front of engine
5 1 3 7

And the opposite for the drivers side.
The head bolts are torque to yield, so they're one time use only. If you haven't got brand new bolts, go get some.

What year is the engine?
99-up (Going through the given sequence each time)
-bolts torqued to 59 ft/lbs
-then loosened one full turn
-torqued to 34-40 ft/lbs
-torqued to 63-73 ft/lbs

It may not be advisable to re-use the head bolts due to stretch. I'd do some research first. You could measure the bolts and compare to std. spec on length. You really need to clean the threads in the block, I'd use some solvent and round brush to make them as clean as possible then dry fully with compressed air, then lightly oil head bolt threads. Do not allow oil to accumulate in the bottom of the block threads. I'd also do some test threading of bolts before you install head. You should be able to finger tight them depending on tolerance. Any resistance other than thread contact would throw your torque value off.

so they're one time use only

oops, missed that comment.

I don't know what motor your running but I believe you have torque to yield bolts which means you need new ones every time.If it's tty after you tighten the bolts to the torque mark them with A junk yard pen to make sure you get the degree of turns right.

There have been many tests done on what is or is not the best lubricant to use on Head bolts, Everyone test that I have seen, ARP's assembly lube has been the most repeatable as for the correct torque achieved over & over, I wont use anything else. If you don't have a good torque wrench you need to get one, and your going to need a torque rotation gauge as well, as the head bolts are TTY, torque to a specific setting, release, torque again to a specific setting, then torque an additional amount of degrees, this sets the stretch correctly in the bolt & places it in an elastic zone, where it will give max holding strength & avoid failure.

Head Torque

i have the 3.0 a 1999, what and where can i get a gauge to do this?

You need a torque wrench. You can prolly rent/borrow one from your local autoparts store(orilly, napa, autozone) or you can buy one from sears or tool shop. U need to know how to use it so that u don't mess up the torques. And u shoud try and get a decent one.

i have and know how to use a wrench but i have never heard of this gauge that someone spoke of? any ideas?

Read the info in the link & search for info on torque to yield bolts, that should give you all the ideas you need. Short story is you really need to understand the correct process of what is required for a head swap..... or you will be doing it again shortly.

One last thought, if the heads were shaved to ensure flatness then you'll have to adjust the head bolt length by grinding. I'd also measure the block hole depth against the head bolt length to make sure they are not too long, just a double check safety measure to ensure you don't do it all over again soon.

Head Torquing

Can i just do what the chilton manual says and torque to sequence to 59ft.lbs then back all bolts one full turn (360 degrees) then tighten in 2 steps in sequence again to 37ft.lbs then finally to 68ft.lbs

that what my Chiltons manual says for a 99 3.0 but my heads and block are a 2007 does anybody know if the torque is the say?

Where it says "back off all bolts" can i do this without a angle gauge?

thanks for your help!

Head Torque

I know i need to torque the heads to 2007, but does anybody have those torque specs?
