So, I went mudding with some friends yesterday and I got stuck. Instead of pulling myself out with the winch, I thought I could work my way out. I was wrong. I shifted into first and reverse a few times and then I heard a pop. My engine still runs if I have it in neutral but when I push in on the clutch, it wont let my shift gears. My buddy towed me out of the woods and we got to dry ground. I checked under my truck, and the center of the rear axle was wet, I know this has something to do with the problem, but I am not sure exactly what part needs replacing. I would much rather do the work myself, than pay out the bum for a shop to do it. thanks for the help guys.

P.S. It doesn't matter if it is hard to install, my ranger is so beat that if it came down to it, I would junk it before I put $1,000 into it.

if you have it running and put it into gear and let out the clutch and it does nothing. the clutch is toast. if the rear was wet with gear oil you did something to the rearend. if thats the cast pull the cover and take a look

Jack up the back end so that both wheels are off the ground (not in 4wd) and let the clutch out...watch the drive shaft...if it spins but the wheels don't then it's your rear gears...if the driveshaft doesn't spin then it's probably your clutch...or maybe your tranny...

Good opportunity to put in those new gears if it's the rear end...and that is actually less expensive than the clutch unless you do it yourself...:)

Yeah, sounds like maybe you busted the spider gears in the rear axle, a fairly easy task to fix those.i blew the stock 7.5 in my 93 splash 2 times before i upgraded to the ranger 8.8 rear and 4.56 gears. The first time it broke, i twisted the crosspin in 2 places, broke one spider gear in 3 places, broke another in two, and ate one of the spider shims and a c-clip. the second time it just broke another spider gear in 2 places and scarred the crosspin. Also, if you put your truck into gear, does it just take off and your not able to pull it outta gear? if thats the case, then sounds like your slave cylinder and such took a poo, if you put it into gear and you can shift the gears but the rear isnt moving, could be the clutch, if you shift through the gears and u can see the drieshaft moving but no tire movement, then somethin in the rear broke. Also, if the clutch is toasted you should smell a pretty foul oder from it being smoked.

Thanks for the replies guys. it deffinately helps. I can't put the truck into gear. I push in on the clutch, but i cant put it in gear. if the truck is off, i can change gears, but i can only start it in neutral.

So you can push the clutch in and put it into gear and then start it up and it will not just jumpup and take off with the clutch still pressed? or you can put it into gear not running, press the clutch and start it and then let out on the clutch and it will move but u cannot shift it out ofgear without shutting the truck off or forcefully pull it out of gear? sounds like tranny and/or clutch/slave cylinder probs to me.

Hmmmm...check to see if the line from the master is disconnected from the transmission...they are quick disconnects on some years and you may have yanked it out of the tranny if it caught up on a branch or something...

dude it sounds like your slave cylinder i think i had the same problem but i had a new clutch and ended up that i had air in my system

I bet on the rear end
and it is the easiest to check

i deffinately appreciate all the help. i had it towed back into town today and i have tomorrow off from work, so hopefully i will be able to get under there and check it out.
