My timing belt broke while I was driving my 89 Ranger a couple of weeks ago and I am not just able to get around to changing it.

I followed everything in this thread - http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86520

But I am having a problem getting the crank pulley bolt off. I have tried the breaker bar and bump the motor, I have tried an impact wrench and nothing seems to even budge. I did have a mechanic stop by for all of 15 minutes that he could and said he never saw one that tight before. How can I get it off of there? Heat? Something else?

Thanks!

make sure you have a high quality impact socket. I've seen torque loss many times with cheap thin sockets. My impact won't break a bolt loose. Then I try a good name brand socket and the bolt breaks loose.

To add just a bit, get a SIX-POINT socket instead of a 12-point. The six will contact the bolt a lot better, and hopefully prevent rounding.
You can get a breaker bar, feed its handle into a length of iron pipe, and let the pipe rest on the ground. Put the socket on the the bolt head, and crank the engine. Rumor has it that it will come free.
A second choice, if you are fearful of that tactic, is to get a length of rope, remove a spark plug, and feed the rope into the cylinder. Move the crank to squish the rope between the piston and head. It will jam, and prevent the crank from turning. Remember to rotate the crank backwards so the piston is jammed while loosening.

Oh, don't forget to leave a 'tail'...
