Hey guys,
I cant say how much this site has helped me on my Ranger! It is Awesome!!
I have a 1988 4x4 Ranger 2.9 With a 5 speed trans.
I just picked up a 1990 Ranger 4x4 with a A4LD auto, the trans has 10K on it. I did the conversion, 5 speed to the auto.
My question is,,, my 5 speed had 2 plugs, back up lights and neutral switch?? 4 wires total.
The A4LD has a 5 wire plug and a 3 wire plug. I have the 1990 harness off the trans, I "thought" that it would plug in to mine,, NOT! What do I need to do? Do I need a auto computer? I have jacked it up and ran it through 1,2,3 or 1,2,D. But no O/D. Im sure that this is because there is no harness.
Has any one had this problem, or done this conversion and what do I do???
Thanks so much,
Chris AZ 480-227-2833

Pretty sure you will need a harness and possibly a computer form and auto truck. I just swaped the other way to a 5spd and there is a 5 pin plug that controls lock up, reverse lights, and neutral saftey I believe as well as another plug but I'm not sure what that one was for as I didn't have to mess with it in my conversion. But best bet get a harness

You need the wiring harness that goes from the driver side valve cover, plugs into the oil pressure sensor and oil level sensor, then goes down to the tranny. On top of that you NEED the auto computer, the 5 speed computer doesnt have the programming for the electric 3-4 shift solenoid.

why oh why would you go 5spd to A4LD? ...... most go the other way round.

Thanks guys!!

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the help! I went to a few junk yards and the best that I could find was a 1986 6/86. It has the harness, looks wright, but the computer is also a 86 E6TF,, you think this all will work? It is a A4LD Trans and a 4x4??
Thanks, Chris AZ
P.S I was having problems with my 5 speed, not going in gear when cold and poping out of gear, my friend ownes a Yard and got that 1990 truck in with a new trans, all paper work in glove box 10K on the trans,,, thats why the swap,, just getting tired of the stick every day for my driver. The "4" speed car is for the weekends!
