Ok guys lets see if you can pull this chevy-dodge guy out!!! My son has a 1993 Ranger 4x4 5 spd standard 4.0 liter the tranny took a dump. but I cant complain it has 200,000 miles. I cannot finnd a used replacement down here without threating to invade Japan!!! I have however found a 5spd std. out of a 2001 ranger 4 cylinder will it work? I know it will involve some work. I have been working on cars for 30 yrs just not fords. I admit defeat will it mount and work?
While theoretically you could put the internals of that 2wd transmission
into your 4x4 trans there are some differences, particularly gear ratios...
There is also an issue with shimming while attempting to cross the line
between a NON-4.0 trans and a 4.0 transmissions internals into the
"other" case.
While the 2003 trans will also have some significant internal improvements
Assymetrically cut synchronizer dog teeth on 2nd & 3rd, Composite friction
surfaces on the synchro rings for 2nd, 3rd, 5th and Reverse.
But the real issue with doing things that way is that you have to depend
on just ONE critical surface on one critical part from the 4.0 4x4 box being good.
That is the "pocket bearing" pilot on the 4x4 mainshaft.
and that is an area often dammaged by a a "melt down"
So the FIRST question to be asked is how exactly did the 4.0 box fail?
