Short story Long. I just bought a used 98 Ford Ranger for $2000, sitting under a tree for a decade covered in moss and barely running, I decided it was my new project and breathed some new life into it. After 2 days of scrubbing and power washing, I took it to a local shop and had all the fluids drained and replaced and full tune-up replacing all parts. It has 160000 on the engine and is purring like a kitten. It still needs a lot of stuff: Tires, Exhaust is rusted out, Shocks, struts, and windshield. I'm looking forward to souping it up and tricking it out to be a badass 4x4 with all of your suggestions.

Sounds like a good swap candidate to me.
