new to the site and new with a ford ranger! just picked it up the other day. it is a 91 with a 4.0 liter motor. it has 208000 miles and was wanting to service the tranny. it is a 5 speed tranny and was wandering what type of fluid would be recommended here by the pros...

i seen the drain and fill line down on the tranny and it makes me want to drain and fill with some fresh stuff.

the other question i had is how to refill this thing. it is pretty tight space and didnt know if they made a special funnel or something. thanks for all the help as i look forward to asking many questions here on the site. i am so excited!

m5od tranny need atf
others - gear oil (80w90 i believe)

refilling it, i would not know as i filled it when it was out, i can imagine that you could pull the top plate off where the shifter is and a funnel and a hose, although im sure there is a better way to do that

There is a fill plug. Some of the transmissions have more than one.

If you filled it without considering the fill plug, you almost certainly put the wrong amount of fluid in.

And if it has a 4.0L, it also has an M5OD, or the previous owner has to wipe the drool of his picture menu at McDonald's.

new to the manual tranny thing.... and i know that this is a very stupid question but here it goes....m5od stands for manual 5 speed with over drive? yes this is a 5 speed with over drive.

That might be what M5OD stands for (or maybe not), but it is a model name. That's all.

the way ive filled up tight spots is. take a cap funel found on most gear oil jugs. and some hose that you use for your ice maker in your friderator and tape a good section of the hose on the pointed end of the funnel. electric tape worked great for me. just use a healthy amount of it. then screw the cap on your quart oil container, (atf or what ever your using) and you can then squeze the jug and the fluid goes where you want. granted it takes a long time, but you dont spill any and you get it where it needs to go. I have all ways done it this way in tight spots and it works great for me.
