My ranger has started getting coolant in the oil for the past 500 miles or so, so I went to do my head gasket today and pulled the head there are no obvious bad spots in the gasket so will be getting my head checked but what I was concerned with was the number 4 piston almost seems to have a piece broke off of it, right on the edge by the valve relief, was it made like this?

Here it is top right next to the valve relief

Truck does use a little oil maybe 1/2 quart to 500 miles and had a little crankcase pressure but nothing crazy

Bring it around so that piston is up higher and take a better look, and a better picture.

It does look like something bad is happening there, but I can't see it real well.

08,click on the pic to make it bigger, you'll see it.It looks to me like a piece gone out out the top. You'll have to replace that piston if so.

Fummins says top right, but what I see looks like top left of the cylinder with a corresponding black spot at the top of the cylinder wall that is partly clipped at the edge.

Yes top left for some reason the pic flipped from when it was on my phone

I wanted him to bring the piston around and wipe it down for clarity. I can't tell what is damage, and what is possibly reflection from the cylinder walls. It looks like something has been hammering on it.

Probably that big chunk of piston missing... that piston is a goner...

A wiped down picture would be very helpful. As well as a larger picture hosted elsewhere. (imgur is easy)

I do see what's being talked about though:

Ok here's the new problem put it all back together put timing belt on and new plugs and wires and I started a little hard the first time and now won't start at all battery is low because I leafy the alternator and everything off for the test start and just used jumper pack to start first time what's the deal

Sorry not much of a gas man but I know on a lot f the diesels the injectors won't fire unless you have a certain battery voltage, do they do anything like this on these? Kinda need help ASAP cuz other truck is down for a while

Truck ran great during first start up, after the kind of hard start
