Headers issue

How could i get headers on my truck were i can have a dual system and the pipes be 3in in diameter or at least 2 and 1/2. I cant find no headers to do that the the best ones was pacesetters they are only 2in collectors. Help me out anybody haha
 
Part of the problem of having a true dual exhaust is the computer needs to see how much oxygen is in the exhaust, and it needs both sides to be accurate. The 89 computer has only one O2 sensor so the exhaust needs to come together before the O2 sensor. There is nothing saying you can't weld in a bung into a larger exhaust tube, or an "x" cross tube but it would gain you nothing and may hurt engine performance if you stay with big tube. If it's looks, just put on large tube after the muffler.
 
What engine?

My 5.4 breathes fine through 2-1/4 true duals. Dad has a 3" single on his 350 and it has been happy for 15-20 years.
 
woudl thier be anyway i could get 2 02 censors would that work or would i have to get a new computer for that?
 
Good question!
If it was a 4.0 you could get a obd2 computer. They didn't keep the 2.9 that long. Basically after 1996-7 is obd2, before is obd1. you could get a stand alone efi system but is fairly costly and a fairly big learning curve. I suspect that you wouldn't have the knowledge to do it right now, but you can always learn if you try hard enough. I don't have enough knowledge yet either, but one day.

What is it you are trying to accomplish?
 
i am trying to make it were i have a good system on my off road truck. And i heard that a single pipe just doesn't do the trick. i trying to do 2 headers that have a 3in collecter then 2 flow master muffers on 2 3in pipes all the way down with 2 cats on each side. But mabe i can do it were its has 2 headers that have a 2in collector the the cat then the flowmaster then a dual system back from thier.
 
I have heard a single pipe is better balanced for exhaust flow.

I have two V8's with true duals and neither have as big of a pipe as you are wanting to run.
 
Here are some pics of the exhaust on my 91 4.0. I cut it just after where the cat starts, in order to do something similar to what you want to do. I will make a custom adapter to weld on where its cut, and then a cat and a dump. Its going in my race truck so I will be at high rpms all the time, and will have headers and bigger throttle body. I don't see the need for bigger exhaust for what you have planned, but if you insist, then you could do something similar using 2" or 2 1/4" or even 2 1/2". I'll be using whatever equals the volume of the two pipes just before where they join, I want to keep the exhaust flow speed the same. IIRC that will enhance my bottom end torque without sacrificing top end horsepower.

Yea i like that idea i just wish i had the tools to do that job. But i am just going with the big pips well trying too is to like get a good deep sound but by the way you guys are talking. It sounds good with just 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" i just heard 3in sounds better thats way i was stuck on it. What kind of systems would you all recommend for a loud good sounding pips? Cause i am just making this truck my toy not a daily driver.
 
3" is way too big for a 2.9. 2 1/2 is as big as I would go.

As far as sounding awesome like a V8, good luck, it's a 2.9. I ran mine for a few years with stock-sized pipes and no muffler at all and it didn't sound too bad, for a tiny V6.
 
I think even 2" would be overkill for a 2,9

what you really want to avoid is the flow stopping and even temporarily reversing flow between pulses.

THAT is what engineers work to avoid in sizing an exhaust system for any engine...

with 2" duals on a 2.9 reversal o flow is a real possiblity on a 2.9

I suspect 2" true duals might be too large for a 4.0OHV.
