Head unit turning off randomly

I am new to this forum and I will give my intro later, but I have a question first. Last month I replaced the stock head unit in my 2000 Ford Ranger 4x4 XLT Supercab with a Kenwood head unit and left everything else stock. When I turn the volume up fairly loud, the entire head unit shuts off. It happens randomly, so I can't figure out the problem. Is there anything wrong with the head unit or maybe a loose connection is the culprit?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

if i had to guess, i'd say your connections are crap.
When I replaced by ford stereo with a Kenwood, I bought an adaptor that plugs into the ford stereo harness and soldered the other end to the new Kenwood wires. I'd double check your connections and make sure all are good and correct.

I have an alpine headunit in my truck and if i turn it up loud then it turns off. I think it's a safety thing so you won't kill your headunit. Like if you're trying to push too much power through it to your speakers. It'll turn off.

what THEY said, check connections, make 'em better if you have to solder preferably, no butt connectors! if problem still there, then too much juice. you could probably add a small amp if you dont want a big sound system. OH does it get hot when it shuts off? if you can feel alot of at the faceplate then you can imagine the heat to the internals.

I'm thinking that my problem also fits into this post... so i will ask... lol

I also have a aftermarket Kenwood deck that i hooked up myself into my '89 ranger (without the wiring harness). My deck doesnt seem to turn off when it gets too loud other than when my sub is pounding too hard and it turns off everything. I'm thinking that that is just due to taking too much power as i dont have a cap or anything, but if i turn it REALLY loud then i can see the voltage meter on my dash pouncing to the bass :P

But sometimes when i go to change the song or something, instead of changing songs, it just turns off. The song keeps playing, but all the lights on it turn off and it takes a few seconds to put back on the screens display. Then when i do it again it would usually do it again and again. This only happens every once in a while and i think i have linked it to when i just get into the car and the cars still cold. But im not completely sure on this. I'm pretty sure it hasnt dont this while im driving or anything like that lol

Anyone ran into this? I just assumed it was the deck because i bought it used

probably just the head unit. although you should get a cap for your sub, what are you running as far as amp and sub? and how thick are your wires?

I have a Kicker CVR 12" and an Alpine V-power amp (both 400/800 rms/peak). I only have 8 gauge wires right now because thats what came with the setup lol.

ah, ic, yea thats not too bad as long as u dont keep it at maxx all the time
