Iam about to replace intake and head gaskets. Is there any areas with doing this work that I could run into problems with?

Put the distributor in before the upper intake.

EXHAUST BOLTS just like psychopete said, your probably going to break a couple/few. And take the heads to a shop and have them cleaned and magnafluxed. (checked for cracks)

Put some permatex #2 in the valleys where the head meets the block on the intake manifold gasket front and rear. Torque everything down slow in at least three steps in the proper pattern to spec.

I usually take the vehicle to a local muffler shop and pay them to remove exhaust manifold bolts and header nuts/bolts, replace any that break, and reinstall "loosely", it is usually under $60 including parts.

They are fast and have all the tools and tricks that are needed, and replacement parts :)
