ok guys, so this is a 91 explorer with a 4.0 in it. it blew the head gasket so it has been parked for a few months because we havent had time to get into it. we recently got around to tearing it down and pulled the heads. after we removed the heads we noticed rust built up in the front cylinder on both the passenger and drivers side cylinder. just curious if this is there because the water was sitting in the cylinder for a few months or is this a sign that those 2 cylinder werent firing when it was running? and also is it possible to turn the motor over with it torn apart to see if the pistons will move?:icon_confused: thanks alot for any help on this

If the engine sat for a couple of months with water in the cylinders then yeah it could rust. I would use a socket and breaker bar to rotate the engine. You could spray some WD-40 or PB Blaster in the cylinders.

ok. thanks alot, where do i put this socket/breaker bar to rotate engine?

There is a bolt in the center of the crank pulley put a socket on it and turn the engine over clockwise.
