Hey guys, have my Ranger torn down to just the frame and I am restoring components now. Decided to pull the axleshafts and check the seals and bearings, but have to remove the cross pin. Took out the bolt and find that I can drive it 1/8" at most before it doesn't move further. Easily slips back in. The diff gears easily rotate on the shaft so I don't think the gears are keeping it retained. The only thing I can think of is that there is a slight groove on the shaft and this is hanging up on the inside of the hole. I've read it should just slide out. Any ideas?? I stopped pounding when I thought I would damage something.

it should slide right out. are you sure your not pounding the shaft into the case? you should be able to rotate the carrier until teh shaft is pointing straight at you(the side the bolt was on) stick your finger behind the carrier and push it out from teh backside. Done this a bunch of times.

I'm pretty sure but I've done stupid things before. I will take another look tonight and see.

Is it a notched pin? If so you will have to rotate it 90* and then slide it out as far as it will go untill it contacts the rig gear, at which point you can slide the axles in and attatch the c clips.

Thanks guys. Tried again and I think the problem was I didn't have the retainer bolt all the way out. I didn't realize it had a rounded tip and went in the pin pretty far. Once it was removed I was able to tap the pin out and check everything. Thanks!!
