I wanted to see if anyone here would know what is going on. I had bought a 86 ranger stx and it has manual lockers. I went out this weekend to have some fun, I got everything set up and in gear and locked my hubs, and I wasn't getting any power to the front wheels, and ended up getting suck. So I got out of my truck and went to check the lockers to make sure they were ingaged.. And they were.... I then put my hand around them and they were very hot to the touch. (I ended up getting pulled out of the little mud I was in..) When I got back home I jacked up the front of the truck and took both front wheels off, and didnt notice anything out of place or broken. What could this be? Could anyone give me any insight on whats going on or what needs to be done. Thank you everyone for you help..

Corey..

By lockers do you mean lock outs as in hubs or lockers as in a traction aid in the differential?

we know he means lock out hubs.

the real question is... when you say that your wheels werent spinning, did you only look at one side of the truck and assumed that both front werent spinning because you saw that that one side wasnt spinning? what im trying to get to is that you may (more than likely) have an open differential in the front and only one wheel will spin at times so it may have made you think that the 4wd wasnt working when in fact, thats the norm for an open diff.

No, the other wheel wasnt spining. nothing.. No power was going to the front wheel.. Is there anything that I could do to see if they are working???

What cnote is saying is if you don't lock both hubs its the same, nothing happens very common next time when your stuck see if the drive line is turning to make sure the transfer case is in.

jack the front up put the t case in n or 2wd and lock in the hub. spin the front d shaft by hand. a axleshaft should turn left or right side and if the wheel doesnt you have a defective hub. if the wheel spins have someone hold it to see if the other will spin while you continue to turn the D shaft.

Ok I did what you said.... This is what happend, I jacked up the front and put it on jack stands. I kept it in 2h and locked both hubs. I went under the truck and found the front drive shaft and hand spun clockwise. Both tires spun perfectly and smooth. I then hand spun the drive shaft counter-clockwise and everything was the same.... I then Held the drivers side front still and spun the drive shaft clockwise and the passenger tire spun smoothly. same thing when I switched sides....

What could have been the problem? Everyones help is much appreciated.

Thanks....
Corey

when you stated that one of the hubs felt warm, that tells me that the axle was turning in it. possibly the hubb assembly is stripped out internally, or partialy engaging.. do you hear buzzing or grinding when you were stuck?

it may have just enough teeth left in it to turn when you hand turn the shaft while the truck is lifted up, but not enough to power the truck.

If I were a betting man, I would say you have a hub that is bad.

the print in the first post is too small to read.

When I first got the truck it didnt have a locker on the drivers side wheel. It wasn't being driven no dirt got inside. So I went to the salvage yard and got one off a bronco 4x4 could it be a junk locker? Where can i go to get one?
