I am looking for info. on swapping a 2.9 v-6 out and a 97-98 4.0 v-6 into a 1987 Ranger. The EFI harness and engine harness is what I'm not finding any drawings of. Painless wiring offers a harness for a 5.0 as do several other shops.Any help out there would be greatly appreciated . Thank You WJC

To use that year harness and ecu will make things more difficult because the underhood layout changed pretty significantly in that time

It's highly unlikely you''l find a pre-made swap harness for the 4.0 anywhere. The closest you can get is the factory harness from a 90-92 4.0 truck or up to 94 Explorer. If you want to swap the dash too then that can be plug & play.

I suppose it could be plug and play with the dash from a newer truck too but fitting the dash would probably involve serious mods to the firewall.

If you wanna use you're original dash and only do a little wiring see this post:

Note that you will need the ECU for whatever harness you use. Also that the early ECU can run a later engine. How well is the question.:dunno:
