My '04 Edge had hit 100K this summer, so I changed the belt, wasn't bad, just maintenance. Yesterday the belt started squeaking at start up so I gave everything a good looking over.
Q: When did Ford put two pulleys on the crank shaft balancer? (See pic below)
A: Never on a 4.0 that I know of...
I used to have trouble with the old Ford Tempos shedding the outside of the balancers, but I never seen one fail like that..

Anyway, I had a spare I had just taken off the '03 XLT I had just bought to rebuild, but it looked different.. Had me scratching my head (first time working on one of these) Turns out they changed how they were made in 03 or 04, so, an FYI to other first timers like me, they fit and function the same but just look different. (newer ones have 2 holes where the older ones have 4, with only 2 threaded for a puller)

They say you're supposed to change out the bolt (TTY) when replacing the balancer, I didn't, right now my 04 is the only thing I have running (when it rains, it pours..) So I had to get it back running ASAP.

No, your damper pulley has failed. The squeal you heard was the pulley slipping for a bit.

The bolt is TTY, however I have reused it and gotten away with it on several engines. Put a dab of blue thread locker on it. The tension on that bolt is important, but not as critical as some later engines as that timing drive is keyed, so it can't really skip time if the bolt loosens up. It just needs to be there to keep the damper from walking away, which is already unlikely because it's an interference fit to the crank.

Yea it failed, just in a way that it still worked and didn't leave me stranded.
...... Put a dab of blue thread locker on it. .....
Good idea, I'll do that, I think I can get the bolt back out with the radiator installed.
