Hard turning even after replacing power steering pump

If you had one battery terminal unplugged and it still went dead, it is time for a new battery. With a terminal disconnected, there is nothing that could place a draw on the battery.

The battery is brand new....

He is right, if it is draining like that then the battery is shorted internally. Doesn't matter how new it is. Take it back and get a replacement.

Actually that's support for the internal theory. 95 ish % of batteries go bad at one of two times, brand new (especially during shipping) or after about 5 years of service.

Its acting like there's a major short in the charging system somewhere. My husband and I put in his truck's battery, and that one was running just over 2 volts short of what its supposed to be running when the truck engine is on. It was only putting out like 12.4 volts while engine was running. MY battery was only putting out like 12.03. There's gotta be a short somewhere, and we can't find it.

We had the alternator tested, twice, its good.

Sounds more like a broken wire than a short. If you had a short there would be at least one fuse blown. Did you check to make sure you are getting 12V on the alternator's trigger line?

Trigger line? Is that the big wire that connects to the back of the alternator? No, I haven't checked that yet.

don't remember off the top of my head and I don't have a diagram. I think its one of the 3 on the connector.

Ya i got it outta the haynes manual. Supposed to be running 12 volts on it. I can't even get my truck to start, even with a battery at 11.8 volts charged.

11.8 volts is low for a fully charged battery. At a minimum, it should be at 12.6 volts. I would try to take the new battery back for a replacement. It has internal problems.

I cannot get the truck to even turn over to try and start now. Its just clicking loudly. I'm gonna attempt to take the battery back tomorrow, and see if that is the issue. I highly doubt it, something is not right cuz the alternator that I HAD ON there was only FOUR months old when it went bad! The battery that was in there, the guy I bought it from said he put a new one in in 2008. I bought the explorer last year.

^what he said. a battery showing 12.0 can be as much as 3/4 discharged.

That can't be the problem tho! We tried running the engine with my husband's new battery, and the voltage was running low at 12.4 or something close to that.....its gotta be a short. I just don't know where...

I'm so frustrated it makes me wanna cry, or roll the explorer off the face of a cliff.
