my DD is a '00 xlt 4x4 4.0 5spd, im having some tranny issues as of late. i seem to remember the same thing happening last year as well. it seems to me that as the colder months start creeping in upon us (live in Ne CT) my tranny starts shifting very hard, especially neutral to first and first to second. i really have no idea whatsoever why this would be happening b/c i am not very firmiliar with this transmission. my clutch leaves something to be desired so that was my first thought but again this only seems to happen when it is cold outside and last year once it started to warm up the problem went away...

ideas???

Make sure your clutch master cylinder is to the full mark. Also may want to check to be sure the tranny is full of fluid.
If you are letting it idle when come to a stop, it is easier to go to a higher gear like 4th then go to first, see if that helps. Or try pumping the clutch before you put it in gear, you may have a slave cylinder or master cylinder going out. Hope this helps some.

Also make sure that the trans has the correct fluid. If Ford specifies mercon atf and it's filled with gear oil, you would have the symptoms described. This happens more often than one would think.

ok thanks
ill try to check out the fluid later tonight
